In the early years of my culinary adventures, I realized that I was using salt, pepper, granulated garlic, and granulated onion on everything. Absolutely everything. So I decided to test out the best combination of measurements and create my own spice blend. It's simple. It's handy. Once you try it, you won't go back to a life without it. For reals!
Making your own blend allows you to control the cost and quality of your ingredients as well as the level of sodium. Feel free to omit or reduce the salt so you have all the control you need while making your meal with this Anything Seasoning Blend.
Not only does this blend make a convenient hand's-reach seasoning, but it also makes a great gift. Just be ready with extra when you get asked for refills!

Featured Ingredients
Read below about a few of the ingredients used to make Anything Seasoning Blend.
Salt - This recipe needs finer grained salt (table salt) than Diamond or Morton's kosher salt, which will help keep the seasoning amount even. Stay away from iodized if you can. If your local grocery has bulk spices, they most likely carry fine grain sea salt, which is perfect. Morton's also makes this type of salt.
Black pepper - Fine grain black pepper works best here. If you have access to the grain measurement, go for 18 mesh or smaller.
Granulated garlic and onion - I like to use granulated seasonings for this blend because they flow better and are less likely to clump. Also, they are less intense than the powdered versions, so they're more forgiving in the recipe. If you want to use powder, cut the measurement in half. Powdered garlic and onion are great when you need the seasoning to dissolve quickly or evenly, like in a dressing or sauce, or for something that cooks quickly, like scrambled eggs.
Dried parsley (optional and not pictured) - I've never really understood using dried parsley because the flavor is so light and delicate it usually disappears in the dish. In this application, I add it for color and to help keep the seasoning flowing, not clumping.
Tools for the job
- Small bowl
- Small whisk
- Empty spice container, jar, or shaker
How to make this seasoning - the details
- Measure all your seasonings into a bowl. Using a whisk, stir them together to combine thoroughly.
- Pour into an airtight container. It will keep for a few years, but you'll use it up before that!
- To use in any savory recipe, replace 1-to-1 for the salt. Then, add salt to taste if needed. Or, sprinkle directly onto anything you would season with salt, like hamburger patties or breakfast eggs.
